Connecting Books Across Genres

I’m a young adult author who writes in various genres. I have contemporary, paranormal romance, fantasy, and science fiction published, but my two main series include a Dark vs. Light paranormal romance that takes place in the small Midwest town of Hayworth—The Timely Death Trilogy—and a dystopian science fiction duology—Bad Bloods—about children with hindering abilities fighting against an election that decides if they will continue to be executed or not. While The Timely Death Trilogy takes place in Kansas in 2009, Bad Bloods takes place in an undisclosed southern city bordered by the ocean and locked in by walls in the year 2089. 

Despite having different locations, time periods, and genres, these series are connected.

What? How?

Well, let me tell you without spoiling it for you: the characters.

If you read The Timely Death Trilogy and you also read the Bad Bloods Prequel (FREE on Wattpad), you will get to know a little girl named Violet. She is the key to the connection. But that’s all I’ll say for now.

Why did I connect these two, seemingly unrelated stories? Because they ARE related, and they always have been in my mind.

I mean, they existed in my mind at the same time, after all. And so do all of my stories. Which, basically means I connect all of my novels in some way or another.

Consider it a wink to all those readers who follow every book by an author.

But how do I do this?

I’m not sure there’s a method, necessarily. I always tell aspiring writers to follow their gut, and this is often why. For instance, I definitely don’t know every book I will write in my life time, but by keeping my mind and heart open to the characters (and honest), I guarantee they’ll reveal a weird twist of how they got to know each other while hanging out in my mind space.

As an example? 

Many readers were dying for my continuation of The Timely Death Trilogy (or a happily ever after epilogue), but the truth of it was, whenever I attempted to tackle a shiny, pretty ending, I only saw my characters lives becoming more and more complicated as they grew older. (A reality, really.) And while I wanted to leave everyone on a happy note, Violet’s character in Bad Bloods is so powerful to The Timely Death Trilogy, I couldn’t deny what she wanted to say: the truth. And that truth became the connection, and to me, these connections remind us an important truth to every story.

Connecting books across genres shows that a character’s story never ends, even when the pages do.

This author has yet to disappoint me. I have read a lot of this author's work before and when this book was published, I just knew I had to read it and would enjoy it.

This book is addicting and very fast paced. I loved the characters and the connection between them. I love how caring each character was. I love how the author started the story off and how each chapter focused on one character's thoughts. It's full of action and suspense.

Serena

She is strong, feisty, and I just want to cheer her on. She also has really cool powers too.

Daniel

He is a complicated character and I am curious to know more about where he came from and his background story.

I highly recommend this story to read this amazing story.

Audrey Greathouse is a Seattle-based author of science-fiction and fantasy. Raised in the suburbs, she became a writer after being introduced to NaNoWriMo during her sophmore year of high school. Since then, she has drafted more than a dozen books, 100 sonnets, and 800 other poems, and a handful of short stories and one-act plays.

After dropping out of her university and beginning training as a circus performer on the aerial silks, she returned to school to study at Southern New Hampshire University College of Online and Continuing Education to earn her B.A. in English Language and Literature, with a minor in Computer Information Technologies.

 “I’ve got to get you home,” I say.

“You go on. I can make it down.”

“Are you nuts? It’s almost dark, and you’re ill. Don’t argue with me,” I say when I see him open his mouth to protest. “I’m not taking chances with you.”

“It’s not like I can kill myself, is it?”

“Well, no, but fate doesn’t cover other things like the broken legs, ribs, or arms you might get from falling down a mountain.

You need your strength, not to be camped out in the hospital in traction. Besides, what would be the point of us dropping out of school if you end up in the hospital? Come on,” I say, extending a hand to him.

He gets up and waits while I retrieve and shrink my sword. I hang the pendant around my neck so that it rests next to his shears. We walk hand in hand out of the church and to the edge of the clearing.

When we get to the head of the trail that leads back to our cars, I look over at Alex. Just walking across the clearing has made him ill. He’s already white and panting.

“Okay, here’s what we’re going to do,” I say to him. “I’m going to carry you down the mountain. And you’re going to like it.”

He snorts. “I think I’m a bit heavy for you.”

“Trust me. You’re not.”

Picking him up in my arms, I carry him the way a groom carries a bride over the threshold after the wedding. I would be able to carry him easily even if he was well, but his illness has made him thin and highly portable. I’m dismayed that I can feel almost every bone poking me through his clothes. The long pants and shirts of winter have camouflaged how much weight he’s already lost.

“God, this is embarrassing,” he says.

“Don’t think of it that way,” I say as I pick my way carefully down the trail. “Think of it as a privilege that few have ever had. Being carried by a woman is one thing, but being carried by a goddess is something special. We don’t carry just anyone.”

“You’re not even breathing hard,” he complains.

“Could you at least act like you’re struggling? Make me feel a little manlier?”

“I could, but I’d probably trip and injure us both. Just relax, Alex. Let me do the work and don’t complain.”

He gives up and rests his head against my shoulder.

“That’s better,” I say.

About the Author

I became a writer at the age of six when my parents bought me a child’s typewriter for Christmas and agreed to pay me a penny per page for any stories I churned out.

When I got older, I realized that I needed to make (much) more money from my writing so I first turned to the corporate world (where I learned that I am spectacularly unsuited to cubicle life) and ultimately to freelancing where I now write everything from technical manuals to articles on personal finance and European-style board games.

My writing career came full circle when Clean Teen Publishing accepted Broken Fate, my first novel. By my calculations, my parents owe me about $3.00 for that book.

I live in North Carolina and, when not writing, can often be found reading anything I can get my hands on, playing board games, watching sports, camping, running marathons, and playing with my dog.

Excerpt:

The boat glided, slowing to a stop. The silence was deafening after the roar of the engine quieted. Water lapped gently against the boat.

Tana stood frozen in place as Malia sobbed quietly.

“We’re going to die, aren’t we?” Malia asked.

Tana didn’t answer as she looked at the shore—still a half a mile away.

The trawler rocked as something bumped against the side. Her blood turned to ice when she heard a sound, faint, but unmistakable. A low growl came from behind her on the left. The wheel shuddered in her grip. Tana realized a moment later that her shaking hands were the cause.

Stepping toward the door of the cabin, Malia put a hand on her and whispered, “Don’t go out there.”

“Shh, I have to see,” Tana answered.

As she poked her head outside, her heart clamped painfully in her chest as terror gripped her. The first thing she noticed was his eyes—black and filled with hatred. He pulled himself out of the water. He was insanely large, muscular, and had murder in his eyes as he pinned her with his glare.

As he pulled himself up, she could see he was bare from the waist up, and black from the waist down. It almost looked like he was wearing some kind of black wetsuit—except for the pelvic fins. Tana backed away.

This was a merman, and he was furious.

Holly Kelly is a mom who writes books in her spare time: translation--she hides in the bathroom with her laptop and locks the door while the kids destroy the house and smear peanut butter on the walls. She was born in Utah but moved around a bit, living in Kansas, Texas, and Hawaii where she studied marine biology. She's now back in Utah--"happy valley".
