BOOK BLITZ: The 52nd by Dela

The 52nd by Dela

Publication date: October 27th 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Not one of the sacrifices chosen over the long history had survived–until now.

On the tip of the Yucatan peninsula, the immortal Castillo family gathers in Tulum. Weary and haunted, they receive the names of fifty-two human sacrifices chosen once every fifty-two years for the Underworld, a tradition thought to have disappeared with the fall of the Aztec and Mayan empires.

Driving home one night, college freshman Zara Moss swerves to avoid hitting a ghastly figure in the road. Lucas Castillo witnesses the car crash, but when it comes time to supervise her abduction from the wreckage, he intervenes. Something is different about Zara: Lucas has been having dreams of her arrival for five hundred years.

As Lucas and Zara come together to put an end to the bloody sacrifices, they discover that the ancient tradition isn’t so easily broken. The gods are angry, and they have until the Winter Solstice to drag Zara to the Underworld.

LOOK OUT!” she screamed, pointing to the front window.
A black figure stood in the beam of our headlights. I slammed my foot on the brakes, but they locked and the car began to skid. The smell of burning rubber filled the car as we screeched across the asphalt. The man didn’t move, and as we neared him, I cranked the wheel to the right as fast as possible to avoid him. We screamed as the car spun out of control.
As we skidded closer to the unmoving figure, I thought he was done for. I expected him to bounce up onto the windshield and shatter the window into thousands of tiny pieces. But the briefest second before impact, my door rushing directly at him, I saw
It was not a man.
----
Suddenly, looking at Zara made my throat swell, and I started to choke. It was time to take the plunge. I focused on turning onto the hidden road, lowering my speed as the track turned to mud. I felt sick saying this.
Zara, I didn’t come to Tahoe to save you.”
I let there be silence, but I wished I hadn’t. Even with the small rocks banging against the undercarriage, I could still hear her when she gulped, eyes not budging from my face.
----
A mortal life was simple. Wake, eat, and dream. I had never cared about losing that cycle when I changed, but I did now. Watching Zara made me miss its simplicity. She was a pretty sleeper, and the desire for there to be an us worsened a deep-rooted fear. I could get lost in her, and I would lose sight of the consequence of what I was doing... and I, or she—or both of us—could get killed. I would have to break with tradition first, without any blood; otherwise I feared she would never forgive me for what I’d done to be free of it. War and killing came easy for me because of my past, not so much for her. She was too fragile, too clean to be involved in or even equipped with a way to cope with the ugliness. I had to protect her from that, or I fear the hurt would be unfixable.

Dela is the debut author of THE 52ND saga, a multicultural paranormal for young adults. REVIEW: The Lost Girl by R.L. Stine

The Lost Girl

Publication Date: September 29, 2015

Blurb:

Generations of children and teens have grown up on R.L. Stine's best-selling and hugely popular horror series, Fear Street and Goosebumps. Now, the Fear Street series is back with a chilling new installment, packed with pure nightmare fodder that will scare Stine's avid fan base of teen readers and adults. New student Lizzy Palmer is the talk of Shadyside High. Michael and his girlfriend Pepper befriend her, but the closer they get to her, the stranger she seems and the more attractive she is to Michael. He invites her to join him on a snowmobile race that ends in a tragic accident. Soon, Michael's friends start being murdered, and Pepper becomes convinced that Lizzy is behind the killings. But to her total shock, she and Michael are drawn into a tragic story of an unthinkable betrayal committed over 60 years ago. Frightening and tense in the way that only this master of horror can deliver, The Lost Girl is another terrifying Fear Street novel by the king of juvenile horror.

The Lost girl starts off in the year 1950 with a simple…yet not so simple girl named Beth Palmieri. Her father opening a brand new stable in Shadyside after working his entire life to become his own boss. When a horrible turn of events takes place, the page turns and all of a sudden you’re reading present day. There are a few back and forth into time in this novel, but most of this book takes place modern day. Michael meets Lizzy and she seems strange, but he can’t stop seeming to be around her all the time as she’s always seeming lost whenever he sees her. There are some amazing and terrible twists and turns that make this novel go from curiosity, to full-on suspense rather quickly.
This book takes some pretty hefty turns and literally at times, throws the reader for a loop. This is definitely a book that has a slight cliff hanger ending even though you may think it is over, there is still a trickle at the very end.
**SPOILER**  I did not care for one part in this book, and to me it may be personal, but I feel it needs to be mentioned. The act of drinking(even just a couple) beers and then not only driving cars, but joyriding on snowmobiles and having a tragic happening during this escapade is not something I feel should be in any novel, especially not a novel for teens and young adults. I do understand the reason for the actions, and even the method behind the lessons learned, but I do not suggest reading this book if you have a strong emotional past with or involving driving under the influence.
I received this book as a digital Advanced Readers Copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed within are strictly my own.
I give this book 4 out of 5 shields.

You will find her now with her trusty Kindle in hand and toes in the sand! Sarah's debut novel, AWAKEN, released in January, 2012. Since Ruby Milton’s mother committed suicide, she’s forgotten what it’s like to be seventeen.

Saddled with taking care of her toddler brother and alcoholic father, Ruby has no time for fun. She also can’t shake the growing resentment she feels for her mother’s decision, which left her unable to grieve without anger and regret.

Byron refuses to let anyone control his life—or his death. When he left the city behind, he was in search of somewhere where nobody knew his secret. What he didn’t expect was to meet a beautiful redhead whose views conflict so completely with his own. But as their romance deepens, he begins to doubt his choices and decides to return to the city…for one last chance.

When Byron disappears, Ruby will stop at nothing to track him down.

Upon finding Byron, Ruby discovers his devastating secret, and a battle of wills begins. Byron doesn’t want her to know this part of him. He has to deal with it by himself, even though the idea of losing her tears him apart.

Will they be able to see each other through the darkness?

Or should they save their hearts and just let go?

After hitting the travel/poetry/art aisle, I dumped my bag onto the ground before closing my eyes and stretching my arms out until my fingers could just brush the book spines on either side of me. This was my favourite way of choosing a book. Of course, if I didnt like the one I chose, I could always put it back and try again.

Stepping forward, I tried to ignore Mrs. Patfields words and the rampant thudding of my heart, and concentrated on the way my fingers rose and fell from the fat spines onto the skinny ones, waiting for my gut to tell me which book I just had to read. Pausing for a moment, I caressed a long, thin cracked spine, but something made me ignore it and press forward. The right one was coming, I could feel it swirling in the pit of my belly.

After several more steps, my hand moved over something warm and my eyes shot open.

It was a hand, attached to the interesting guy with the fauxhawk, the artists wet dream. Id have to stop calling him that. My cheeks burned and my pulse hammered as my eyes skimmed over his perfectly cut cheekbones and jaw, his mouth with the slightly fuller bottom lip, and those deep blue eyes of his that made me forget all about Mrs. Patfield for a second.

He looked at me, one eyebrow raised and a hint of amusement curving his lips.

I made a little yelping sound in the back of my throat and slid my hand away before shoving it behind my back, berating myself for having left my hand on his for longer than a reasonable second.

Sorry,I mumbled, stepping back, my hand still tingling. I was justlooking for a book.

The way he kept staring at me without saying a word made me hyper aware of the new pimple on my cheek, my chapped lips, and the frizzy-ness of my hair. So I did the only thing that came naturally to me. Book talk. The book in his hand was well worn, the cover faded.
Youre into poetry?I asked, trying to keep from staring at that brutal silvery scar of his and wondering if hed filled out a bit or had finally bought some clothes that fit. I decided on the latter. The top he wore clung to his lean, wiry biceps, but the angles in his face appeared sharper and more chiseled, as though hed gotten thinner.

He raised the book and gave it a little shake.

Hes my namesake.

My eyes skimmed the title.

So, your name isumLord? As soon as the words escaped my lips, fresh heat prickled my cheeks. I hadnt cracked a joke since forever and for some reason it made me feel vulnerable, like I was standing there without pants.

Well, most people address me as Lord, but…” he drummed his fingers against the bookshelf and chewed on his full bottom lip as though he was thinking hard, “…Ill let you call me Byron, because…” he shrugged his shoulders and looked at me from the corner of his eyes, the hint of a grin on his lips. Its not every day I get felt-up in a bookstore.

Push Me, Pull Me Author, Vanessa Garden, in Threes

3 things I love about being a writer:

Getting to do things vicariously through my character, things Id never get to do in real life like kissing a hot, mysterious musician in the rain!
Being able to work in my pajamas
Having a good excuse for my sometimes messy house

3 ways I make time to write:

I try to ignore the TV
I sleep less (which unfortunately results in a very absent mind the next day)
I try to get up early in the morning while the rest of the house sleeps

3 books that made me want to become a writer:

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett (because it is just brilliant)
The Heaven Series by Virginia Andrews (because of Troy in the maze *sigh* I read and re-read this series as an early teen about ten times)
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (because I still get teary eyed thinking about the characters and their yearning for a better life)

3 challenges I faced writing Push Me, Pull Me:

Trying to write the heavy, emotionally charged scenes without bawling my eyes out!
Finding the time to write while looking after my three children
Staying confident as a writer during the submission process

3 things that inspired Push Me, Pull Me:

The lovely bookstore, Collins Booksellers, where I used to work
Jeff Buckley the (late) singer - he is partially behind the inspiration for Byron's character
Lord Byron - Byron's namesake!

3 favourite characters from Push Me, Pull Me:

Ruby, Byron, Mrs Patfield

3 words to best describe Push Me, Pull Me:
